There are many things to be aware of when you are planning a day of hiking. You must consider all aspects of hiking and be prepared for any type of weather. You must also be aware that you must be ready if a strange animal would cross your path. Following are some ideas on what to bring and things to plan for.

The most important thing to consider is the possibility of getting lost. Even if you are on a well-traveled trail this could happen. You must realize that this is a possibility and be ready for that. When hiking, you should always carry a compass as a precaution. Become knowledgeable with the area that you will be hiking in and find out towns or cities that are near and where they are located. Familiarizing yourself with this information could save your life.

Another important item to bring along is water. You will be extracting a lot of energy while hiking and you do not want to become dehydrated. If you become lost, having an adequate supply of water can be a lifesaver. Another reason to bring along plenty of water is in case of injury. If someone is hurt along the way, you will want water to clean the wound. You can always throw the water away when you are back to your starting point, if you brought too much, but getting water while hiking can sometimes be difficult.

It is a good idea to pack extra clothes. The weather may be beautiful and not a cloud in the sky, but the weather can change quite rapidly. Bring an extra sweatshirt and even a rain poncho is a good idea. They will not take up much room and will be highly needed if the weather gets chilly or rainy. Keep in mind that you can always take the layers off, but if you are cold you are miserable.

When starting out on the hike pay attention to landmarks that grab your attention. This can be useful if you are coming back after sun down and are not sure of the way.

Always be attentive and aware of things around you. When hiking, you may come across wild animals and some may not be friendly or scared of you. Walking with a stick or cane is a good idea because you can shoo animals away with it.

Most animals will scamper at the first sound of you, but others may not. If you bring food along, seal it good so the animals are not able to smell the food on you. This could attract them to you and interest them in coming closer. If you encounter animals while hiking, you should remember to stay calm and try not to agitate them.

Overall, hiking is an excellent way to spend the day. It will give you exercise, fresh air, and get you out of the house. Following the tips above can make the day more enjoyable and make you better prepared for things that may occur. The main thing to remember is to have fun and enjoy the day! Don’t overdo yourself and allow plenty of time for the journey because you may want to stop and smell the roses along the way!!
